LAMB – Icelandic thriller. Un Certain Regard Cannes 2021

A childless couple in rural Iceland make an alarming discovery one day in their sheep barn. They soon face the consequences of defying the will of nature, in this dark and atmospheric folktale, the striking debut feature from director Valdimar Jóhannsson. Darkly imaginative and brought to life by a pair of striking central performances, Lamb shears expectations with its singularly wooly chills, blending humor, dread, and sorrow into one picture, and providing commentary on the human journey. It’s a unique film experience that is equal parts peculiar and absorbing.

VESUVIO – O COME HANNO IMPARATO A VIVERE IN MEZZO AI VULCANI

The metropolitan area of Naples is one of the most densely populated on the planet and lies between Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, two of the most dangerous active volcanoes in the world. Over a million people live in the so-called red zone, ready to be evacuated at the first sign of an eruption. Perhaps. The film relates the stories of those who live there on this “time bomb” and who, despite the danger, are linked to this land of fire, to the traditions and superstitions on the black mountain, Vesuvius, which overlooks the city, as if was the true and only master.

Fatiha, Malika, Anissa and Sarah don’t seem to have much in common except for their specific relation to a shrill, loud cry, ‘the youyou’. But their stories about desire, migration, revolt and be/longing resonate all the more with mutual feelings as the film unfolds towards a collective and poetic statement about female solidarity. The youyou is the French colonial name for the high pitched trill that women in Northern Africa and the Middle Eeast launch as an expression of joy or other intense emotions.
