ITA.

Giuria Lungometraggi > Gabriele Anaclerio (Presidente) scrittore e saggista | Francesca Zanza, produttrice cinematografica | Stefania Bonelli critica e ricercatrice

Giuria cortometraggi > Silvia Stucky (Presidente), artista | Nicoletta Bea, animation designer | Maya Vetri, curatrice

Eng. The On the Road Film Festival is an independent festival of international significance which follows an original path inspired by travel, geographical wandering, making a track across wild lands and city landscapes.

Presented in two separate competitions, and sections outside the competitions, with focal points and side events, the festival will take place from the weekend of 26 March till 10 April 2022 at the historic Cine Detour in the Monti area of Rome.

In the competition there are 9 feature films and 9 shorts selected from over 200 proposed from 40 countries all over the world.
Two juries comprised of distinguished personalities from the world of independent cinema, the art and literary worlds with a high female contingent, and the votes of the public watching the films, will allocate the prizes in cash as well as special mentions.

The Festival will be inaugurated by two special events outside the competition. On Saturday 26 March 2022, there will be the screening of Osannaples, the documentary by Deborah Farina in the presence of the director and author and with Lino Vairetti, founder and leader of the Osanna, the legendary trailblazers of theatrical prog-rock which inspired Genesis. The film tells of the great fervour of the Neopolitan musical scene through the course of the 70s with interviews and original musical contributions and rare collectors’ films.

On Sunday 27 March, as in every edition of the festival, there will be a rich programme with live soundtrack of the silent On the Road cinema. Adriano Lanzi, Roman guitarist, composer, improvisor, and performer of electronic music, will follow the sound track of  The Man with a Movie camera, by Dziga Vertov, filmed from dawn to dusk, mainly in the Ukrainian (then in the USSR) city of Odessa. From a director actually born in Poland, from a Jewish family, a naturalised Russian then who became one of the greatest exponents of the Soviet and European avant-garde cinema, this is an extraordinary experimental film of universal value which breaks up the grammar of film and treasures the experience of futurism and constructivism in a galvanising crescendo of visual stimulation.

From 1 till 10, from Friday to Sunday, it is the turn of the International Competition of features and shorts, which will culminate in the evening of the prize-giving on 10 April 2022, happily informal and eschewing the red carpet , as we usually do over here, when we will hand out the Jury Prizes, the Special Mentions and the prizes selected by the public.

The cue for this the eighth season is the principal based on the ‘Path of Least Resistance’, a concept based on and borrowed from the second law of thermodynamics by which, water, for example, in its never-ending journey, always searches for the way which poses the least possible resistance.
A principle which grows into the Toaist philosophy of Wu wei, the non-action or better the understanding of when to act and when not to do so, when there is a prospect of harmony, equilibrium, economy and concentration of the forces.
A sober reminder to never put out the flame of Reason, while we turn to breathe in the warring fetid breathe at the heart of Europe.

Osannaples

by/di Deborah Farina. Italy 2021, 96′ Italian o.v. English sub

“Osannaples”, has obtained the acclaimation of public and critics everywhere, for the originality of the story and the search of new languages. M. Deborah Farina, between the main directors of Italian independent cinema, returns to Detour to tell the story of the Neapolitan musical revolution, starting from the end of the Sixties, which saw the Osanna’s progressive-rock music (authors of cult records including “L’uomo”, “Palepoli”, “Milano calibro 9” with Luis Bacalov), as the main avant-garde, on whose artistic and human story the doc is based.

L’uomo con la macchina da presa

by/di Dziga Vertov. Urss 1929. Live Soundtrack Impro performed by Adriano Lanzi (Sampler / Synth)

di/by Myriam Van Imschoot. Belgium 2018, 48’, Arabic/French o.v. Italian sub

ITA.

ENG. Fatiha, Malika, Anissa and Sarah don’t seem to have much in common except for their specific relation to a shrill, loud cry, ‘the youyou’. But their stories about desire, migration, revolt and be/longing resonate all the more with mutual feelings as the film unfolds towards a collective and poetic statement about female solidarity. The youyou is the French colonial name for the high pitched trill that women in Northern Africa and the Middle Eeast launch as an expression of joy or other intense emotions.

Photographing NY

di/by Cesare Bedogne. Italia 2021, 8’54’’, Eng o.v. Ita sub

ITA.

ENG. This short film is based on a poem I wrote remembering the two weeks I spent in New York, on the occasion of my first photo exhibition overseas. I almost forgot this piece of writing, which I had unusually written directly in English during a long feverish night, until it came back to my mind fifteen years later when I went to Portugal and I started dreaming about America on the other side of the lonely Atlantic. So, I suddenly started taking filmic shots inspired by the poem, and later included in the editing a few of the photographs I took in New York 15 years before, interlacing through film-making different periods of my life and different artistic languages in what is more a portrait of psychic interior than a documentary.
