Ben Boucher è un discepolo di quella cultura sotterranea dedita ad una rappresentazione "estremamente" esplicita dei fatti. Di una cultura che non si vergogna a scherzare con temi "seri" come la morte o il sangue. Di una cultura catalogata di cattivo gusto, fine a se stessa, ma molto più penetrante e corrosiva della "buona cultura". Ben è di cattivo gusto e, fortunatamente, non tutti amano il buon gusto.

1. Quanti anni hai e cosa fai per vivere?
Ho 30 anni e ho fatto l'illustratore, il graphic designer e la post produzione di serie televisive animate. FLAT & FLUFFY è stato creato come progetto per l'università.

2. Quali sono le tue principali influenze?
Sono un appassionato di cinema. Amo i vecchi film exploitation, horror, blaxploitation, di fantascienza, western e naturalmente d'animazione. I miei registi preferiti sono Tex Avery, Ralph Bakshi, e John Carpenter. Essenzialmente amo il cinema trash!

3. Cose ne pensi della scena underground?
Oggi le cose nell'underground d'animazione sono molto più facili grazie al computer. In passato gli animatori avevano bisogno di utilizzare macchine da presa molto costose per la realizzazione di un film; ora invece possono fare dei cartoni animati nelle proprie case, tramite un buon computer e uno scanner, ad un costo molto inferiore e in molto meno tempo. Questo ha creato un forte incremento della qualità e del numero di prodotti animati. Anche internet ha contribuito a facilitare la promozione e la visione dei film. E' un buon periodo per gli animatori underground.

4. Che tipo di distribuzione ha avuto FLAT & FLUFFY?
Il film è stato programmato in festival, specialmente in Europa e nel Nord America. E' stato anche trasmesso su TV network Artè in Francia. Attualmente sto negoziando per distribuire il film in America.

5. Stai lavorando a qualcos'altro?
Sto lavorando ad un nuovo film chiamato A Fistful of Science, in cui è presente una macchina del tempo alimentata ad urina, molti spargimenti di sangue, e molti fan di Dr Who che muoiono in situazioni assolutamente orribili. E c'è anche un po' di musical!!

6. Cosa ne pensi del cinema italiano?
Io amo il cinema italiano! Molti dei miei registi preferiti come Sergio Leone, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Michele Soavi, Umberto Lenzi e Bruno Bozzetto sono italiani. I registi italiani hanno fatto alcuni tra i migliori film di zombi e western di tutti i tempi.

How old are You and what Do You do to live?
I am 30 years old and I have worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and doing post-production on animated TV shows. Flat-N-Fluffy was made as a project for university.

Which are your artistic influence (Movies, comics, music ecc.)?
I am a movie fanatic. I love old exploitation films, horror, blaxploitation, sci-fi, westerns, and of course animation. My favorite directors are Tex Avery, Ralph Bakshi, and John Carpenter. Basically I love trashy cinema!

What Do You think about the underground movie scene?
When it comes to underground animation, things have gotten a lot easier for the filmmakers because of the things we can do with computers now. Whereas in the past animators needed to have access to very expensive cameras to make their films, they can now make their cartoons in their own homes with a good computer and a scanner, at a much smaller cost, and in much less time. This has resulted in a steady increase in the quality and number of underground animated films being made. Likewise, the rise of the internet has made it very easy to promote and showcase your films. These are good times for underground animators.

What kind of distribution had FLAT & FLUFFY?
So far the film has played festivals, mostly in Europe and North America. It has also played on the francophone TV network Arté. I am currently in negotiations to have the film distributed in America.

Are You working on something else now?
I am currently working on a new film called A Fistful Of Science. It features a urine powered time machine, more bloodshed, and many Doctor Who fans die in horrible, horrible ways. And yes, it has musical numbers.

What do You think about the Italian cinema?
I love Italian cinema! Many of my favorite filmmakers have been from Italy, such as Sergio Leone, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Michele Soavi, Umberto Lenzi, and Bruno Bozzetto. Italians have made some of the best zombie films and westerns ever.
